One of the finest Beychevelles of the modern era — produced in the last year of the Achille-Fould family's century-long ownership, making it a historically resonant bottle. A storming wine, still generous and full of pleasure — smoked earth, truffles, rose petal and peony floral aromatics, tobacco and undergrowth, softly spun tannins and an unhurried desire to please, still fresh and treading lightly through the palate. One of the most approachable 1986s tasted — wild strawberry, mulberry, cola, and graphite aromas that unfurl in the glass; medium-bodied with spice and clove on entry, fleshier than expected for the vintage. The tannins have become subdued and integrated, giving the wine structure along with lift, ripe juicy cassis, and a distinctive cigar box note that really works. Now in its prime. A beautiful piece of Saint-Julien history at a compelling price. Drink now–2030.
