H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a Funchal merchant who devoted his life to sourcing and aging the finest wines produced on the island. The house remains one of the smallest producers still active in Madeira, guided today by fourth-generation cousins Helena and Isabel Borges, who continue every step of production and aging in the family's historic Funchal building. Vintage-dated bottlings like this one draw on stocks the family has held in its cellars for decades, a practice that has earned Borges particular recognition among collectors of older Madeira.

This 1993 Verdelho comes entirely from that variety, grown along Ribeira da Janela on the island's north coast. Fermentation is carried out with careful control of temperature before fortification with grape spirit halts the process, leaving the wine dry. It then spent decades aging in oak casks, developing structure and concentration through Madeira's slow oxidative process well beyond the aging typical of the house's younger bottlings, and as a Frasqueira-style wine, it may form a natural sediment that benefits from decanting.

The wine shows a pale amber color with golden reflections and a complex, exuberant nose of orange, walnut, honey, and toasted nuts. On the palate it is dry and richly concentrated, with pronounced woody notes and firm structure carrying flavors of beeswax and light spice through a long finish. It makes an excellent aperitif on its own, and once opened will keep well for several months.

92 Points
"Bottled in December 2017, the 1993 Vintage Verdelho has 73gm/L residual

sugar. The superb nose offers dried quince, Seville orange marmalade and

touches of sandalwood and chamomile. Wonderful! The well-defined

palate has a real spring in its step, presenting orange peel and smoky

notes and a saline tang toward the back of the throat. Very cohesive and

quite persistent, this is an excellent recent bottling from H M Borges.
