Acquired by Warre's in 1978, Quinta da Cavadinha is the house's flagship vineyard, sitting high in the Pinhão Valley on a dramatic south-east-facing slope rising from 180 to 440 meters, directly across the river from Quinta do Noval. In non-declared years like 2005, the estate's best fruit is bottled separately as a single-quinta Vintage Port, sharing Warre's characteristic elegance and lifted floral aromas while more closely reflecting Cavadinha's own distinct character. A blend of Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional, expect a complex, seductive profile of prunes, dried cherries, coffee, and tobacco, lifted by amazing tannic grip and vibrant acidity, with smoke, wet leaves, and petrichor adding further nuance. A genuinely well-regarded single-quinta bottling from one of the Douro's most storied vineyard sites, now drinking beautifully at 20 years of age.
"The 2005 Quinta da Cavadinha is a field blend from old vines, plus Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Franca, bottled in June 2007 after about 18 months in old vats. It comes in at 98 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a graceful single quinta that still shows off some stuffing and power, even nearly 20 years later. It adds nuance and complexity. No, this isn't the greatest Port ever, but it gives you a chance to get something classy with some maturity at a very low price point. That makes it a great deal. It has plenty of life left, but don't expect this to age for another 50 years, like a new Vintage Port. This is a 2022 release of 4,500 cases."
