2006 Churchill's - Crusted Port Bottled 2006
Aged in wooden casks and bottled in 2006, this Churchill’s Crusted Port delivers concentrated berry intensity and drinkable maturity right now, bypassing the decade-long cellar wait required by most vintage ports. Traditional crusted port blends multiple harvest years but displays a single bottling year on the label. The wine rests in wood for roughly three years before being sealed in bottle, allowing it to develop drinkable richness while retaining enough acidity for immediate enjoyment.
The 750ml bottle pours a deep garnet with pronounced notes of ripe blackberry, stewed plum, and espresso. The palate follows with dark cherry, cocoa nib, and a whisper of cracked pepper, supported by firm but accessible tannins that smooth out as the wine opens. The finish is clean and moderately long, characteristic of a well-made bottle-aged ruby style.
Natural sediment forms during extended bottle life, so standing the wine upright for several hours and decanting carefully before pouring is essential. After decanting, allow 60 to 90 minutes of breathing at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to fully unlock its aromatics. Complement the fruit-forward structure and gentle spice with aged gouda, Stilton, dark chocolate, or toasted almonds. This port closes out a dinner beautifully or stands alone as a structured digestif.
