2011 Sandeman - Porto Vintage Port
Bottled from Sandeman’s 2011 Douro harvest, this Vintage Port captures a declared vintage shaped by dry summer conditions and moderate autumn rain, yielding wines with concentrated fruit density and polished tannic structure. Matured exclusively in seasoned wooden casks before sealing in glass, the 2011 release maintains the house’s historic emphasis on power balanced with floral lift. Nose notes cluster around blackcurrant, stewed plum, and cocoa powder, unfolding into secondary layers of dried violet, cedar, and a subtle mineral edge.
The palate is substantial and tightly wound, anchored by firm acidity and grippy tannins that require extended bottle age to soften fully. Alcohol integration remains precise, preventing any warming sensation despite the wine’s inherent richness. Because bottle-aged Vintage Port produces coarse sediment naturally, mechanical filtration is never used. Separate the clear liquid from the deposit by decanting slowly, pausing immediately as turbidity reaches the neck.
Allow the wine to breathe for sixty to ninety minutes after decanting. Serve at 15–18°C (60–65°F) to preserve aromatic volatility and control ethanol perception. This 750ml format pairs effectively with aged gouda or pecorino, roasted hazelnuts, and dark chocolate with 70 percent cacao content. Keep unopened bottles stored horizontally in a stable 12–14°C environment; the vintage offers reliable drinking windows extending from late 2025 through 2040 as the tannic matrix continues its gradual polymerization.
