2013 Tenuta San Guido - Bolgheri Sassicaia Super Tuscan (750ml)
Sassicaia stands as the wine that launched the Super Tuscan category, first planted with Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta on his family's San Guido estate. Kept as a private wine for decades, it was finally released commercially in 1971, and it went on to earn its own dedicated appellation, DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, in recognition of the singular terroir behind it. The grapes, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a portion of Cabernet Franc, grow across select estate plots with calcareous, marl-rich soils threaded with the stones and pebbles that give the wine its name.
The 2013 vintage benefited from a gentle growing season, with a cool spring and a summer moderated by sea breezes that allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The resulting wine pours a deep ruby red and opens with layered aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, and wild herbs, joined by hints of lavender, tobacco, and sweet spice. On the palate, the wine shows real finesse, with polished, well-integrated tannins, bright acidity, and a saline, mineral-driven finish that lingers with notes of licorice and dried flowers. Elegant rather than powerful, this vintage rewards further time in the cellar and pairs beautifully with grilled red meat or aged Tuscan pecorino.
