Produced on the historic grounds that launched Italy’s Super Tuscan revolution, the 2013 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia reflects the unique coastal terroir of Bolgheri through a dominant Cabernet Sauvignon composition blended with Cabernet Franc.

The estate vines root in calcareous marl soils rich with stones and pebbles, a geology that drains moisture quickly and imparts distinct minerality to the fruit. The 2013 vintage developed under a cool spring and summer weather patterns moderated by nearby sea breezes. These conditions favored gradual sugar accumulation and preserved fresh acidity, producing a wine built for measured cellaring rather than immediate consumption.

The liquid presents a deep ruby hue and unfolds with layered aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, and wild herbs. Subtle notes of lavender, pipe tobacco, and sweet spice emerge alongside a polished tannin structure that supports bright acidity throughout the mid-palate. The finish proves notably enduring, delivering saline minerality that trails off with licorice and dried flower accents.

This vintage rewards patience, continuing to integrate and complexify over the next decade. Allow the decanter twenty minutes to open before pouring. Frame the tannic architecture with protein-rich dishes such as grilled red meats, which mellow the wine’s structural grip. Pair similarly bold preparations with aged Tuscan pecorino to accentuate the coastal saltiness embedded in the finish.

"impression has remained pretty much the same. One difference I did notice at this more recent tasting of the 2013 Bolgheri Sassicaia is the bouquet. It has shifted to slightly more delicate and finessed aromas of pressed flower and blue violets. You do of course get that solid core of dark fruit and spice that characterizes this famous Tuscan blend. But that extra time in the bottle has awarded wiggle room for profound precision and focused detailing. The wine's complexity emerges slowly with subtle notes of savory spice and tobacco. There is power and depth here, especially in terms of the mouthfeel. As the wine evolves in the glass, it begins to show ethereal tones of road paving, tar and licorice. This Sassicaia should go straight into the cellar"
