Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 in Aÿ, where the family-run house has remained ever since, prized for a rich, structured style built on a high proportion of barrel-fermented Pinot Noir. Bollinger still hand-riddles and hand-disgorges its prestige cuvées, and La Grande Année, first produced only in exceptional years, represents the house at its most complete and expressive.

The 2014 vintage blends sixty-one percent Pinot Noir with Chardonnay drawn largely from crus including Aÿ, Verzenay, Chouilly, and Oiry, with a slightly higher share of Chardonnay than usual to soften the vintage's more angular edges. The wine is fermented entirely in oak barrels, aged for years in Bollinger's cellars, and finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter after disgorgement in mid-2021.

The nose combines cherry and lemon with quince, bergamot, hazelnut, and mirabelle plum, carried on a fine, intense mousse. The palate turns vinous and layered, framed by delicate acidity and a long, saline, sea-air finish that lingers with citrus and orchard fruit. Serve with roast guinea fowl, seared foie gras, or aged Gouda.

"Bollinger’s 2014 La Grande Année is a great way to start the evening as

guests mill around Wheeler Farms. It is early evening in Napa, but

there is still plenty of action in the winery, where various lots are being

pressed under the watchful eye of winemaker Nigel Kinsman. There

are some moments where I would very much like to be a civilian, a

regular person enjoying the night, but I am more concerned with our

guests having a great night, so I quickly go back to check on our wines.

The Bollinger 2014 is everything I expected; bright, focused and full of

all the energy this late-ripening vintage conferred to the best wines
