2014 Louis Roederer - Champagne Brut Cristal Rose (750ml)
Louis Roederer has remained family-owned since its founding in Reims in 1776, and Cristal Rosé represents one of the house's most singular creations. Jean-Claude Rouzaud introduced the cuvée in 1974, a century after the original Cristal, selecting old-vine Pinot Noir from a small parcel of Grand Cru vineyards in Aÿ that the house has farmed biodynamically for years.
Cristal Rosé is built primarily from this old Aÿ Pinot Noir, macerated together with a small addition of Chardonnay juice from Avize and Mesnil-sur-Oger using Roederer's proprietary infusion method, which extracts color and ripe fruit character while preserving freshness. About a fifth of the wine is vinified in oak, malolactic fermentation is avoided entirely, and the finished Champagne carries a dosage of eight grams per liter.
The 2014 shows a pale pink hue with coppery glints and a bouquet of sweet cherry, almond, and red berry layered with white flowers and wet chalk. The palate is full-bodied and fleshy, with cranberry, mint, and blood orange notes riding a pillowy mousse toward a long, mineral finish. Serve with grilled octopus, roasted squab, or a dark chocolate tart.
