Crafted at the celebrated Quinta da Roêda estate, the 2016 Croft Vintage Port captures the distinct mineral richness of Portugal’s Douro Valley. Since joining the Fladgate Partnership in 2001, the house has preserved its classic identity while drawing on nearly four centuries of trade heritage. The 2016 growing season combined a hot, dry summer with abundant groundwater, enabling late-harvest ripening that began in mid‑September. Following fermentation, the field blend spent approximately twenty months maturing in wooden vats, a comparatively compact aging window designed to protect the vintage’s exuberant fruit profile before bottling.

The wine pours a deep purple ruby bounded by a bright, lively rim. Early aromas present ripe strawberry and blackcurrant, gradually unfolding into the estate’s trademark resiny gum cistus and a faint botanical hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, concentrated berry flavors rest beneath a dense, closely woven tannin matrix that pushes through to a remarkably extended finish. The restrained wood influence allows the primary fruit to remain prominent, delivering immediate drinkability alongside the structural backbone expected of a declared vintage.

Serve this Vintage Port neat after dinner at a cool cellar temperature so the concentrated fruit can properly unfold. Open the bottle an hour ahead, then pour it through a traditional decanter for forty to fifty minutes to gently soften the youthful tannins and integrate the alcohol warmth. The rich fruit architecture stands up beautifully to a dark berry crumble, while the firm acidity and savory undertones create a balanced contrast when served alongside an aged pecorino. Position it at the center of festive tables or quiet winter evenings, accompanied by spiced nuts, marzipan, or plain shortbread cookies.

94 Points
"The balance is just more appealing. It shows beautifully with a couple of days of air. As with all Ports of any quality, this could use some time. This is gripping, but it won't sear your mouth with tannins. You are going to have to cellar it awhile to allow it to acquire more complexity and more harmony, though. This is showing more promise than ever."
