The 2017 Fonseca Vintage Port delivers a rich, fruit-driven expression of a widely declared Douro year, blending immediate approachability with the structural backbone required for decades of bottle age. Crafted under the 1822 legacy of Manuel Pedro Guimaraens and drawing vineyard access alongside Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca asserts a distinctively opulent house character. This cuvée originates primarily from Quinta de Santo António, Quinta do Cruzeiro, and Quinta do Panascal, assembled from a traditional field blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca.

The wine undergoes nearly twenty months in used French oak prior to bottling, a timeframe that maintains core fruit intensity while allowing early tannin softening. Visually, it presents an inky purple-black body with a narrow magenta rim. Aromatics reveal dense woodland dark fruit layered with brighter red berries, leafy balsamic cues, and a subtle cedar whisper. The palate tracks round and velvety, anchored by firm sinewy tannins and bright acidity that drive a long, complex finish.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this vintage alongside hearty, savory plates that match its density. Roasted lamb complements the wine’s earthy depth and structural grip, while slices of well-aged Manchego highlight its lingering acidity and velvety mouthfeel. Built for both today’s glass and tomorrow’s cellar, this 2017 release captures the full weight of the declared vintage without sacrificing drinkability.

97 Points
"Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060"
