Jeff Cohn Cellars is the project of winemaker Jeff Cohn, a longtime champion of Rhone varieties in California who first crossed paths with Yves Cuilleron, one of the Northern Rhone's most respected winemakers, at the Hospice du Rhone gathering in Paso Robles back in 1998. That meeting eventually grew into an ongoing partnership, and Domaine des Chirats, whose old French name translates roughly to "home of the pile of rocks," is now in its fourth-plus vintage as their shared expression of Rockpile Syrah.

The fruit for this bottling comes from the Rockpile AVA in Sonoma County, a rugged, high-elevation appellation known for thin, rocky soils and intense sun exposure that push vines to struggle and concentrate flavor in small yields. Cohn and Cuilleron built the wine with an eye toward the structured, savory style of Cote-Rotie rather than a riper California house style, fermenting and aging the Syrah with techniques drawn from the northern Rhone. The result is a wine built for patience, with a full-bodied frame meant to soften and open over more than a decade in bottle.

The wine shows tar and scorched earth over cassis, blackberry pie, and violets, with supporting notes of olive, thyme, ground pepper, and a menthol lift on the finish. Full-bodied and grainy in texture, it carries well-tempered fruit alongside savory, gamey undertones more reminiscent of the Rhone than typical New World Syrah. Its structure and earthiness make it a natural match for braised lamb shoulder, herb-crusted duck breast, or a peppery charcuterie board.

96+ Points
"Coming from a collaboration between Jeff Cohn and Yves Cuilleron, the 2017 Syrah Domaine Des Chirats is wound up and tight yet has wonderful purity in its blackberry fruits as well as notes of ground pepper, candied violets, bouquet garni, bay leaf, and gamey notes. Possessing a killer mix of ripe, sexy fruit and classic, Old World Syrah wildness, it’s full-bodied and flawlessly balance, with ample tannins and a great finish."
