The Barolo of the South — and one of Italy's most compelling age-worthy reds.

Named in memory of founder Anselmo Paternoster, Don Anselmo is an iconic symbol of the history and continuity of the Paternoster winery — a wine that year after year reaps critical acclaim and belongs in the cellar of every dedicated Italian wine enthusiast.  The estate covers 20 hectares of black volcanic soil overlooking Monte Vulture — an extinct volcano whose tuff-rich soils lend a degree of depth and complexity to wines capable of aging for decades.

The 2017 offers dusty ripe red berries with slightly meaty and herbal nuances, vivid citrus-rind acidity, firm but not over-firm tannins, and a long finish — medium- to full-bodied, brimming with good energy and the promise of long aging.  Other notes find rich aromas of wax, Mediterranean herbs, coffee beans, and black pepper, the fruit slowly emerging from the background on a wine of remarkable complexity and structure.

Jancis Robinson has drawn direct comparisons between Aglianico del Vulture and Barolo — the tannic grip, volcanic minerality, and exceptional aging potential place it firmly in that elite company. Decant two hours minimum. Best from 2025 through 2040.

92+ Points
"Like an amplified expression of everything expected from an Aglianico del Vulture, the 2017 Don Anselmo lifts from the glass with a savory and exotic bouquet as musky currants, underbrush and cigar ash are contrasted by nuances of ginger and spiced citrus rinds. It’s
unexpectedly soft and pliant on the palate with creamy waves of textural black fruits, yet beneath it all, a web of fine tannins slowly builds. Wood tones, liquid-dried florals and a potent staining of primary concentration are left to linger through the long finale, as the Don Anselmo displays its hulking structure. Bury this beast in the cellar for at least three to five years.
