Released in 2019 after extended barrel maturation, the 2017 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port showcases the distinct mineral intensity of Portugal’s Douro Valley. Harvested earlier than any previous vintage on record, this wine relies heavily on Touriga Franca for primary freshness, balanced by Touriga Nacional, Sousão, Alicante Bouschet, and Tinta Amarela. Under the direct supervision of Charles Symington and Bernardo Nápoles, the port was bottled unfiltered to preserve its natural texture and concentrate the varietal character.

A deep purple-black hue frames a nose layered with lavender, rockrose, fresh mint, and warm ginger. On the palate, dense blackberry and dark plum flavors are anchored by peppery tannins drawn directly from the region’s slate soils. The wine builds steadily toward a lengthy, structured finish that rewards patience, positioning it as a solid choice for multi-decade cellar aging or careful decanting ahead of important gatherings.

Serving & Pairing Recommendations
  • Ideal Servicing Temperature: Serve between 16–18°C (60–64°F) to balance the alcohol warmth with aromatic purity.
  • Decanting Method: Transfer to a glass decanter twenty minutes before pouring to separate natural sediment and open the tight tannic framework.
  • Savory Food Matches: Complement the peppery spice and structured mouthfeel with slow-cooked venison stew, braised short rib, or grilled game birds.
  • Cheese Compatibility: Pair with high-fat, sharp options like aged Cheddar, Manchego, or Parmesan to cut through richness while mirroring the port’s stone fruit notes.
Grounded in vineyards documented since the mid-1500s and restored following the Symington family acquisition, this cuvée translates traditional Douro viticulture into a precise, age-worthy port built for collectors and dedicated enthusiasts.
96 Points
"This offers of a lovely mix of raspberry, black currant, plum and fig p?te de fruit notes, which stretch out slowly over a ramrod straight graphite spine. Bramble, anise and apple wood details are tucked in neatly on the finish, giving this a compact feel for now, but everything is in place for a long, steady maturation in the cellar. Shows a pleasant, dry edge to the finish. Best from 2035 through 2055. 1,200 cases made, 263 cases imported"
