Bottled as a single-vintage expression from one of Portugal’s oldest Port houses, the 2017 Ramos Pinto delivers concentrated Douro valley character in a standard 750ml format. Sourced from carefully monitored vineyard plots across the Demarcated Region, this bottling reflects the 2017 growing cycle’s combination of generous sunshine and brisk coastal breezes, resulting in wines with high sugar concentration and bright acidity. Extracted through traditional maceration techniques designed to maximize polyphenol development, the liquid matures solely in neutral wooden casks, preserving primary fruit definition while building the structural tannins required for prolonged aging.

Freshly poured, the wine exhibits a deep garnet-purple center with luminous red reflections along the glass margins. Dominant aromas of blackberry jam, ripe plum, and wild hibiscus quickly give way to tertiary signatures of damp soil, dried orange peel, and sweet pine resin. The palate carries a dense yet balanced viscosity, supported by firm but polished tannins that grip the gums evenly without drying sensation. Secondary flavors of dark chocolate, cracked cinnamon, and licorice root emerge mid-swallow, settling into an extended finish defined by slow-release minerality and lingering roasted cherry seeds.

Serving this port properly enhances both clarity and aroma projection. Stand the bottle upright for twenty-four hours before opening to encourage sediment to compact at the base. Decant steadily through a fine mesh strainer into a wide carafe, stopping pours once granular lees approach the neck to prevent bitterness and cloudiness. Maintain a serving temperature between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius using tulip-shaped vessels that capture heavier alcohol vapors while channeling concentrated aromatics toward the nasal passages. Complement the residual sugar and assertive framework with aged cheddar, toasted hazelnuts, date-studded flatbreads, or seventy percent cacao dark chocolate. Store any remaining portions tightly sealed and refrigerated to preserve peak aromatic integrity for four to five days after exposure.

"The 2017 Vintage Port is a blend of 70% Touriga Nacional (a big increase this year), 15% Touriga Franca, 10% Sousão and the rest a field blend from old vines. It comes in with 94 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was aged for only six months in very old (50+ years) Portuguese vats (balseiros) and then in cement tanks. When first seen, this was a tank sample in Porto. It's now bottled and in the USA. This seems rounder and less invigorating than the winery's Ervamoira this issue, but some may prefer the lesser personality here—relatively speaking. What you get in return is intense fruit flavors, leaning to blue fruits, the just-crushed essence of the fruit. It coats the palate and is simply delicious. The structure is not as stunning, but there certainly is some, even though this is rather approachable.

That said, with a couple of days open, this developed beautifully—and better than the Ervamoira. Maybe they'll flip places again, but right now, this is better. With time, this acquired more intense aromatics and more intensely flavorful fruit. It blossomed. The hallmark of this wine became its suddenly (and surprisingly) rich fruit. Yet it is graceful too. With this performance, I do not prefer the Ervamoira anymore. It remains to be seen how well they both age over a long term. They both drank well after being open for a few days, but every young Vintage Port of quality should. It will certainly hold well for a few decades or more. In the shorter to mid-term, I expect this to become sterner, drier and more intense, as it sheds the baby fat and shows some underlying steel. It's entitled to an uptick in s
