Artadi was founded in 1985 by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, together with his family and a group of local growers, in the heart of Álava. Now in its fifth generation with his son Carlos also involved, the estate practices organic, sustainable farming across its vineyards in Laguardia, respecting the traditions passed down since its founding. Artadi left the Rioja appellation in 2015, choosing instead to bottle its wines simply as Álava, a decision the family made to distance its work from the inexpensive, high-volume wines often associated with the broader region.

This white comes from Viura grapes, locally known as Macabeo, grown across vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at elevations between 450 and 700 meters, on soils rich in clay and limestone. The cool nights typical of this altitude help preserve the grapes' natural acidity. Following harvest, the wine ferments and ages partly in stainless steel and partly in barrel, a process that builds textural depth while keeping the fruit's freshness intact.

The wine shows aromas of fennel, white flowers, and a subtle muskiness, layered with citrus and orchard fruit. On the palate it is lively and pure, with bright acidity, a chalky mineral edge, and real structure that rewards food pairing. It suits roasted white fish, herb-crusted chicken, or a plate of aged sheep's milk cheese.

92-93 Points
"The white 2018 Viñas de Gaín Blanco comes from a number of vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at 450 to 700 meters in altitude on clay and limestone soils. In this rainy and cooler year, it fermented with some skins and then matured for two years and four months in stainless steel (plus a handful of barrels) and finished with 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.33. It has a strong and acute note of fennel and aniseed, white flowers and musk, with a lively palate from the cool vintage; it's balanced and has purity, without very showy aromas—a white for food. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. In 2020 and 2021, there will be a little less white wine, as they have added some white grapes to the reds"
