Château La Louvière sits a few kilometers south of Bordeaux in Pessac-Léognan, where winegrowing goes back more than 700 years. The château dates to the late 18th century and has been a listed Historic Monument since 1991. Today the estate belongs to the family-run Vignobles André Lurton, which holds HVe3 environmental certification and opened a partly underground cellar for aging its reds in 2009.

The 2018 growing season ranked among the warmest in Bordeaux since 1900. Abundant spring rain gave way to persistent drought from June, which favored ripe, concentrated fruit. The red is built mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a small portion of Petit Verdot. Aging in oak adds subtle vanilla and toasted character without masking the fruit.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in the glass, the wine opens with redcurrant jelly, fresh blackberry, and warm black plum, layered with dried mint, cedar, and ground clove. The medium-bodied palate is savory and refreshing, with finely grained tannins, bright acidity, and a finish lifted by red berry fruit. Elegant and lively, it is approachable now yet balanced enough to keep developing in the cellar.

93 Points
"Ripe cherry, stewed blackberry, nutmeg, cedar and black olive on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with sleek, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Flavorful. Try from 2022."
—James Suckling-James Suckling
