2018 Domaine de Montille - Volnay En Champans (750ml) [PRE ARRIVAL]
Domaine de Montille's modern identity was forged by Hubert de Montille, the Dijon lawyer whose austere, patience-rewarding style became a Volnay benchmark starting in 1947. His son Etienne joined the domaine in 1983, took full charge in 1995, and has since guided the estate toward wines with more early aromatic openness and silkier texture, while still preserving Hubert's emphasis on balance and long aging potential over sheer power. The domaine has grown considerably under his direction and today draws on parcels across both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.
En Champans ranks among Volnay's most respected climats, a steep, south-facing slope running along the D973 whose name derives from "champ" and "pans," roughly translating to sloped field. The upper portion is markedly calcareous with pale, light brown soil, while the lower section turns more clay-driven, with earth shifting toward reddish brown. Domaine de Montille's vines run the full length of the hillside, capturing strong sun exposure throughout the growing season. This 2018 was fermented with roughly half whole clusters and matured in barrel with a meaningful portion of new oak.
The wine opens with a floral, almost wilted rose petal character layered over vibrant red cherry fruit. The palate is tannic on entry, tightening into a brisk, saline finish that signals real aging potential. Structured and a touch uncompromising in its youth, it rewards patience over immediate drinking.
