2018 Tenuta Alfredosa - Montefalco Rosso (750ml)
Umbria's best-kept secret — and one of Italy's most rewarding food wines.
Alfredosa's Montefalco Rosso has become a cult favorite among those in the know — a wine that consistently drinks well above its price point, with a house style that is velvety and long, with a sensational duality of feminine Sangiovese fruit and the brooding power of Sagrantino.
Montefalco Rosso DOC blends Sangiovese — the backbone — with Sagrantino, the indigenous grape of Umbria and one of the most tannic varieties in all of Italy. Here Sagrantino plays a seasoning role, lending its bitter, earthy edges and firm tannic grip to a wine built around Sangiovese's freshness and fruit.
The result is sensationally intense — wild flowers, violet, and red berry jam on the nose, full-bodied and rich on the palate, dry with a long finish and a delicate hint of spice. Now with six years of bottle age, the 2018 is hitting its stride — tannins softened, flavors deepened, and Umbria's character fully on display.
Decant an hour and pour with lamb, wild boar, or anything coming off the grill.
