2018 Tenuta San Guido - Bolgheri Sassicaia Super Tuscan (750ml)
Producer
Tenuta San Guido was the vision of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines on his Tuscan estate in the 1940s purely for his own enjoyment, naming the resulting wine Sassicaia. The wine remained largely private until 1968, when it was released commercially through the distribution network of his cousins at Antinori, quickly earning international acclaim. The estate remains in the family today, carrying forward a legacy that helped establish Bolgheri as one of Italy's most respected wine regions.
Growing and Production
Sassicaia is built primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role, grown on the estate's own vineyards within Bolgheri, close to the Tyrrhenian coast. The 2018 growing season began cool and wet before turning warm and dry ahead of harvest, producing a classic, cooler style vintage that favors elegance and precision over sheer power. Marking the wine's 50th anniversary release, this vintage follows the estate's long established methods, aiming for balance and finesse rather than a bolder or more concentrated expression.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby color and an aromatic profile built around plum, dark cherry, and blackcurrant, layered with tobacco, cedar, and a touch of baking spice. On the palate it is midweight and lifted, with fine, polished tannins and bright acidity carrying the fruit through a long, precise finish. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, aged beef, or a peppercorn crusted steak.
