2021 Colgin Cellars - Syrah Napa IX Estate (750ml)
Colgin Cellars was founded by Ann Colgin, whose deep affection for the wines of the Northern Rhône led her to plant Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage clones on a rugged, volcanic hillside within the IX Estate. Located in the Pritchard Hill area overlooking the heart of Napa Valley, the estate has become known for producing a Syrah that reads as strikingly Rhône-inspired even while grown in California soil, a project the winery considers one of uncommon character among its collection of vineyards.
The Syrah grapes are grown on rocky, mineral-rich volcanic terrain that lends the wine its distinctive textural intensity and precision. Fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation, then the wine is aged for roughly twenty-two months in French oak barrels sourced from respected Burgundy coopers, with a portion new, allowing the fruit to gain depth without losing its sense of freshness and lift.
The finished wine offers aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and violet layered with smoked meat, graphite, and cracked pepper, with a supple, velvety texture supported by fine, well-integrated tannins and a long, savory finish. It carries real power balanced by an elegant, almost floral lift. This Syrah suits braised short ribs, grilled lamb, or aged hard cheeses.
