2019 Cousino Macul - Finis Terrae (750ml)
Finis Terrae was born in 1992, when the Cousiño family set out to create something they had never attempted in over a century of winemaking: a red superior to their historic Antiguas Reservas, first bottled in 1927. The name, meaning End of the Earth, nods to the estate's position at the foot of the Andes in Santiago's Alto Maipo. This 2019 release marks the wine's thirtieth vintage, arriving in a redesigned label that reflects the milestone while staying true to the meticulous blending process that has defined the wine since its debut.
Each vintage of Finis Terrae is built by tasting through hundreds of possible combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah until the ideal balance of fruit, acidity, tannin, and oak is found. The 2019 settled on sixty percent Cabernet Sauvignon, twenty seven percent Merlot, and the remainder Syrah, sourced mainly from the family's original vineyards in Macul with a smaller contribution from Buin. The finished blend then aged for fifteen months in French oak, about three quarters of it new.
Deep cherry in color, the wine offers a complex nose of blackberry and cassis alongside camphor, olive, and a whisper of clove. The palate is elegant and medium bodied, with fine, silky tannins and a long finish driven by ripe cherry fruit. It pairs beautifully with duck breast, aged gruyère, or a dried fig tart.
