2019 Domaine du Clos de Tart - La Forge de Tart (750ml)
Clos de Tart traces its origins to 1141, when Cistercian nuns from the Abbey of Tart acquired the land in Morey-Saint-Denis. The walled, over 7.5-hectare vineyard is the largest of Burgundy's five Grand Cru monopoles and has passed through only a handful of owners across nearly nine centuries, most recently in 2018 when François Pinault's Artémis Domaines, also owner of Château Latour, acquired the estate. Under director Alessandro Noli, the domaine has continued a shift toward organic and biodynamic farming, earning Biodyvin certification in 2019.
La Forge de Tart takes its name from Climat de la Forge, the site's name before the nuns' arrival, and is made from the estate's younger vines, generally around twenty years old, that are kept separate from the old-vine fruit reserved for the grand vin. Classified as Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru rather than Grand Cru, it is harvested, sorted, and vinified with the same care as its more famous sibling, fermented with a portion of whole clusters and aged in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels.
The 2019 shows a deep purple hue and an inviting nose of fresh red fruit, laced with spice and floral notes of peony and violet. The palate is supple and precise, with fine acidity, soft tannins, and a long, energetic finish that reflects the site's underlying structure.
