Elio Sandri crafts wine at Cascina Disa in Monforte d'Alba, right in the heart of the Barolo appellation in Piedmont. His roughly seven-hectare estate dedicates about three hectares to Barolo, with vines farmed without herbicides or synthetic chemicals to protect soil health and biodiversity. Grapes are hand harvested, and in the cellar Sandri favors an artisanal, traditional approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts followed by extended aging in large oak barrels.

This bottling comes from the Perno cru, a section of Monforte d'Alba known for limestone soils and gray marl that give Nebbiolo added structure and complexity. Made from 100% Nebbiolo, the wine undergoes a long skin maceration before its years-long stay in botti grande, a process that builds both elegance and aging potential.

In the glass, expect intense aromas of ripe red fruit, sweet baking spice, violet, and forest floor, with characteristic Barolo notes of tar and rose. The palate is full and enveloping, carried by fine, well-integrated tannins and a refreshing lift of acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. The finish is long and harmonious, echoing the aromatics found on the nose. This is a classic, honest expression of Nebbiolo built for the table and for the cellar, ideal alongside braised red meat, game, or aged cheese.

92 Points
"The 2019 Barolo Perno is a gorgeous, delicate wine. Aromatic and light on its feet, with lovely complexity, the 2019 is a total delight. Orange peel, dried herbs, mint, spice, sage and kirch are all finely cut in this haunting, ethereal Barolo. The acid profile and tannins are those of a Barolo that needs at least a few years in bottle to be at its finest."
