2019 Madaudo - Etna Rosso DOC Fumante Contrada San Lorenzo (750ml)
Cantine Madaudo is a young Sicilian estate based in Randazzo, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, founded in 2016 by sisters Maria Pia and Cristina Madaudo. The pair set out to build a quality-driven, environmentally conscious winery rooted in their family's Contrada San Lorenzo vineyards, drawing on Etna's volcanic terrain and distinct climate to craft wines with a strong sense of place.
Fumante is sourced from vines planted in the volcanic soils of Contrada San Lorenzo, at elevation on Etna's slopes, where cool nights and mineral-rich ash and lava deposits shape the fruit. The blend leans heavily on Nerello Mascalese, filled out with a small portion of Nerello Cappuccio, two indigenous varieties long associated with the mountain. Following fermentation, the wine spends time aging in wood, which lends it a subtle roundness alongside its naturally bright acidity and moderate tannin.
The result is a ruby red wine moving toward garnet with age, its bouquet marked by cherry, strawberry, and raspberry fruit alongside allspice, pepper, and gentle notes of cocoa and coffee from oak contact. On the palate it is harmonious, dry, and savory, with well-integrated tannin and a lingering mineral edge. It pairs naturally with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or aged pecorino.
