2019 Valdipiatta - Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna d'Alfiero
Crafted exclusively from Prugnolo Gentile vines planted in the early 1970s, the 2019 Valdipiatta Vigna d’Alfiero combines decades of site maturity with eighteen months of Allier oak aging to deliver a structurally refined Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Under the direction of Miriam Caporali and consulting oenologist Éric Boissenot—renowned for his work at Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Latour—the estate applies precise cellar protocols designed to highlight terroir transparency. Following a brief pre-fermentation maceration and controlled yeast fermentation, the wine matures in French Allier barrels throughout malolactic conversion. Twelve additional months in bottle rest precedes commercial release, ensuring clarity, stability, and seamless phenolic integration.
The aromatic profile opens with pronounced floral notes and saline minerality anchored by concentrated dark plum, cracked black pepper, and savory Mediterranean herbs. The mid-palate presents denser extract than the estate’s standard Cuvee, yet maintains a sharp, youthful backbone of primary acidity. Fine-grained, supple tannins provide structure without harshness, guiding the wine to a protracted finish layered with crushed flint and sweet spice.
This structured red aligns best with protein-forward, deeply flavored dishes that complement its earth-driven architecture. Pair it with slow-braised wild boar ragù, rosemary-roasted lamb shoulder, or aged Canestrato Toscano to mirror its herbal complexity and balance the moderate tannic weight. Decant thirty minutes prior to serving to allow the oak-derived cedar and vanilla nuances to fully express alongside the primary fruit.
