2020 Albert Boxler - Chasselas (750ml)
Domaine Albert Boxler traces its roots to a Swiss ancestor who settled in Niedermorschwihr in 1673, though it was his descendant Albert who first bottled and commercialized the family's wine under its own name in 1946. Today the estate is led by Jean Boxler, who tends holdings centered on the granite hillside grand cru of Sommerberg and is widely regarded as one of the finest winemakers working in Alsace. The domaine's approach favors minimal intervention, honoring techniques passed down across generations in a region Boxler helps prove is, alongside Burgundy, a source of the world's most compelling white wines.
Chasselas is a rarity in Alsace, planted on barely a hundred hectares regionwide, and finds a particularly favorable home on Boxler's granite slopes. This bottling comes from vines around forty-five years old, farmed organically and hand-harvested before a natural fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is aged in old foudres, large neutral wooden casks kept in a small cellar beneath the family home, before being bottled without fining to preserve its purity.
The wine has a lively, almost effervescent energy, often described as evoking a bubbling mountain spring as it moves across the palate. Expect delicate white flower and citrus aromas, green apple, and a mineral edge of wet stone, finishing crisp and refreshing. It's an excellent match for light seafood, fresh goat cheese, or a simple charcuterie spread.
