2020 Antinori - Toscana Rosso IGT Solaia Super Tuscan
Marchesi Antinori has been making wine in Tuscany since 1385, with the family now on its twenty-sixth generation of winemakers. In the 1970s Antinori helped pioneer the Super Tuscan category by blending Cabernet Sauvignon into traditionally Sangiovese-based wines, first with Tignanello and then, in 1978, with a dedicated bottling from a small parcel within that same estate. That parcel became Solaia, and it has since grown into one of Italy's most acclaimed wines.
Solaia comes from a twenty-hectare, southwest-facing block within the Tignanello estate, set at 350 to 400 meters above sea level on stony alberese limestone and galestro clay. The blend leans heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, all hand harvested. After gentle fermentation in conical wood vats, the wine ages roughly eighteen months in new French oak barriques, with lots aged separately before final blending.
The 2020 pours a deep ruby and opens with layered aromas of blackberry, black currant, and plum alongside mint, myrtle, and lavender. Spice notes of clove, pepper, and cocoa carry through a rich, full-bodied palate, framed by velvety tannins and a long finish. It calls for grilled game, a rich beef stew, or aged Parmigiano.
