Bouchard Père & Fils has been shaped over nine generations since its founding in Beaune in 1731, and the Henriot family, owners of Champagne Henriot and William Fèvre, acquired the house in 2005. Today Bouchard is the largest holder of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in the Côte d'Or, with 130 hectares spread across roughly 450 individual plots, including 12 hectares of Grand Cru sites such as Chambertin itself. Winemaking is overseen by chef de cave Frédéric Weber, working from the historic Château de Beaune, the fifteenth-century fortress that has served as the house's headquarters since 1820.

Chambertin is the original grand cru of Gevrey-Chambertin, distinct from its neighbor Clos de Bèze, and widely regarded as Burgundy's most prestigious address for Pinot Noir. Bouchard's fruit is hand-harvested and vinified in small batches before aging in French oak, with a portion of new wood, to preserve the site's power without overwhelming it.

Weber described the 2020 vintage as concentrated and vibrant, fresher than the warmer 2019. This Chambertin shows a straight, powerful, and restrained character, with a firm, intense core carried through to a chalky, mineral finish.

94-96 Points
"The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru, picked 30 August, has a lovely, complex and well-defined bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, white pepper and clove. The palate is well balanced with a fine spine of acidity, tensile and energetic with a touch of white pepper and clove on the finish. This is a very impressive Chambertin."
