Johnny Graham founded Churchill's in 1981 with his brothers Anthony and William, naming the company after his wife, Caroline Churchill. The house has built its reputation on a drier style of Port, made with a longer fermentation that requires less added brandy. Johnny Graham and Ricardo Pinto Nunes now make the wines together, working from Vila Nova de Gaia and from Quinta da Gricha in the Douro Valley.

The 2020 Vintage Port came from an unprecedented year and an unusually difficult harvest, yet it produced a big, ripe Port in which the natural acidity of Quinta da Gricha plays an important role. It is a field blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão. Following house tradition, the grapes are foot-trodden in open granite lagares. The producer notes an ageing potential of more than 50 years.

The color is a powerful ox-blood red. Aromas of violet, cherry, dark plum, briar, and black currant mingle with hints of licorice root and orange blossom. The muscular palate has a fresh vein of tannin and balanced acidity, finishing with rich, jammy fruit and a touch of spice. This is a young, serious Port built for the cellar.

94-96 Points
"Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge lightening. Closed bouquet, dark wild berries and ripe plums, fresh orange zest, delicately nutty, a hint of chocolate. Powerful, juicy, ripe dark fruit, sustaining, integrated tannins, complex and adherent, fine dried fruit nuances of figs in the aftertaste, very good length, promising potential."
