2022 Karamolegos - Assyrtiko Santorini Estate (750ml)
Artemis Karamolegos leads one of the most dynamic wineries on the island of Santorini, continuing a family winemaking tradition that began with his grandfather's hobby vineyards in the 1950s before Artemis formally founded the estate in 2004. The family owns just over three hectares of vines, some over a century old, spread across some of the island's most respected villages for Assyrtiko, and holds long-term leases on additional plots, giving them access to a wide range of altitudes, aspects, and native grape varieties.
This Estate bottling blends ninety percent Assyrtiko with a small portion of Athiri and Aidani, sourced primarily from old vines averaging eighty years across Pyrgos, Exo Gonia, Megalochori, and other historic sites. Santorini's volcanic soils are naturally resistant to phylloxera, so the vines grow on their own original rootstocks, with roots often reaching twenty meters deep to find moisture in the island's dry, unforgiving terroir. Each variety ferments separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then rests on its lees for several months before the final blend is assembled.
The wine opens with a bouquet of stone fruit, citrus, and characteristic volcanic minerality, joined by delicate floral and herbal notes from the Athiri and Aidani. The palate is vivid and intense, with tangy acidity and a saline, briny finish reminiscent of sea spray. It pairs beautifully with grilled fish, shellfish, or a tomato-based seafood stew.
