Le Macchiole traces its roots to 1975, when Eugenio Campolmi purchased his first vineyard in Bolgheri, well before the region's international reputation took hold. Rather than following his neighbors toward classic Bordeaux blends, Campolmi pursued single variety wines of striking purity and precision. Today the estate is guided by his widow, Cinzia Campolmi, who has carried that founding vision forward, maintaining the meticulous vineyard and cellar work that first put Le Macchiole on the map.

Growing and Production

This Bolgheri Rosso draws fruit from four of the estate's vineyards, blending 50 percent Merlot with Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon in roughly equal remaining shares. The wine ferments for about 15 days in stainless steel before aging some 10 months in a mix of second, third, and fourth passage barrique alongside a portion held in cement, an approach designed to preserve freshness while still building real depth of character.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 vintage shows ripe plum and black cherry fruit alongside notes of turned earth, cedar, and black pepper, with a floral lift of crushed rose petal running through the background. The palate is medium to full bodied, with silky, well integrated tannins and bright, crunchy acidity carrying through a long finish. It pairs naturally with grilled steak, roasted duck, or a rich tomato based pasta.

93 Points
"The Le Macchiole 2020 Bolgheri Rosso is 50% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerhouse wine that has become a steady little engine for the estate economy, growing from a production of 36,000 bottles to 140,000 bottles made annually today. This vintage does a terrific balancing act with dark fruit and concentration on the one hand and an accessible easy-drinking personality on the other. Black fruit cedes to baked brioche, spice and toasted aniseed. The wine finishes for 10 months in a combination of second, third and fourth-year barrique, and about 30% of the total goes into cement. The finish is polished and fresh, and you get good value."
