2020 Marcarini - Barolo La Morra (750ml)
Marcarini is a historic estate in the Barolo region now guided by the fourth generation of the founding family, who continue to shape the winery's direction with a focus on expressing individual terroir. In 2015, that new generation set out to craft a Barolo built specifically around the character of La Morra's soils, resulting in this cru-focused bottling. The estate has built its reputation on respecting long-standing Piedmontese tradition while refining its approach vineyard by vineyard.
This Barolo is sourced entirely from Nebbiolo grown within the commune of La Morra, at elevations between 300 and 380 meters on calcareous clay soils rich in magnesium. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with submerged cap maceration over several weeks, followed by aging of up to 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels ranging from 10 to 50 years old, then several more months resting in bottle before release. The Tortonian soils typical of this area tend to produce Barolo with lifted aromatics and softer structure compared to other communes in the appellation.
The result is a garnet red wine with aromas of violet, rose, ripe cherry, and sweet spice, layered with notes of orange zest and dusty earth. On the palate it is medium bodied with fine, polished tannins and bright acidity, offering immediate charm alongside the ability to develop further over the next decade. Pair it with braised veal, wild mushroom risotto, or aged Toma cheese.
