Sardinia’s southwest corner, at its best. Barrua is a Carignano-led red from old vines on calcareous sandy-loam soils near the sea in the Sulcis region, with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot adding structure. It’s dark and nearly opaque, with black cherry, wild berries, Mediterranean herbs, clove, pepper and licorice, plus vanilla and cedar from 18 months in French barriques. Full-bodied, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a spicy finish. Pour it with lamb, grilled sausages, aged pecorino or a wild boar ragù.

91 Points
"This compact red slowly reveals flavors of ripe black and red currant, raspberry, loamy earth, and espresso, tying the profile tightly to firm, fine-grained tannins. As this opens in the glass, accents of bay leaf, smoked paprika and anise emerge to linger on the chewy finish. Carignano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best after 2028. 1,000 cases imported."
