2021 Casar de Burbia - Mencía Hombros (750ml)

Hombros comes from Casar de Burbia's oldest vines — 50 to 100 years old, planted on steep slopes above 600 meters on the estate's slate, clay, and iron-rich soils. The name comes from the practice of pruning back the top clusters, or "shoulders," of these old-vine plots to concentrate what remains. Hand-harvested and fermented at high temperature in small tanks, then aged a minimum of 12 months in French Allier and American oak. The result is a vibrant, spicy Mencía brimming with cherry, blueberry, and floral aromas, framed by polished tannins and bright acidity, finishing long and mineral. A serious, structured expression of old-vine Bierzo Mencía built for both the table and the cellar.

"The Mencía red 2021 Hombros was produced with grapes from the paraje Valdaiga in Valtuille de Arriba. It fermented with uncrushed grapes and matured in rolling 225- and 500-liter oak barrels with the lees. Despite the moderate alcohol, 13.5%, the sensation is quite-ripe fruit and generous sweet spices. It's medium-bodied with fine tannins and a tasty and long finish. 21,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023"
