Castello di Bossi centers on a fourteenth-century estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, on the southern edge of the Chianti Classico zone, acquired by the Bacci family in 1980. They brought in noted enologist Alberto Antonini, whose non-interventionist philosophy has shaped the winery's approach ever since. Across the estate's roughly 1,260 acres, warm days and cool nights at higher elevation help preserve acidity even as the grapes reach full ripeness, a balance that has become the hallmark of the property's wines.

This Gran Selezione is made from 100 percent organically farmed Sangiovese, grown entirely on estate land, as required for the designation. Gran Selezione sits above Riserva as the newest and strictest tier within Chianti Classico, banning any purchased fruit and requiring a minimum of 30 months of aging. Here, the wine spends 24 months resting in large 40 to 50 hectoliter casks, an approach that lets the fruit stay expressive while gaining structure and depth.

Deep ruby with garnet at the rim, the 2020 offers a floral, lifted nose of black cherry and plum, layered with cedar, sweet spice, and a touch of chocolate. The palate is fleshy and dense, finishing long with notes of saddle leather and dried herbs. It pairs beautifully with brick-pressed chicken, herb-roasted pork, or a plate of cured meats.

94 Points
"Made with 100% organic Sangiovese, the Castello di Bossi 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castelnuovo Berardenga is silky and fine. Although the overall fruit delivery certainly entails a good amount of power and concentration, the wine actually feels..."
