Castello di Bossi is a castle estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the southernmost commune within Chianti Classico, with a history that reaches back to the ninth century. The name Berardo is a shortened nod to the surrounding Berardenga area, whose position at the warmer, southern edge of the appellation tends to produce rounder, fuller expressions of Sangiovese than vineyards further north. A dynamic team now runs the property, blending respect for the land with a willingness to embrace modern winemaking techniques, working with consultant Alberto Antonini on the vineyard's organic parcels.

Berardo is made entirely from Sangiovese grown at around 300 meters on dark clay soils, conditions that lend the wine extra richness and depth. The wine ages for two years in large botte before spending an additional year in bottle, a traditional, patient approach that allows the fruit to develop real complexity without leaning too heavily on oak character.

The 2021 shows a luminous ruby red color with aromas of dark cherry, plum, sweet spice, violet, and vanilla, joined by hints of dark chocolate and menthol. Full bodied yet smooth, the palate carries an almost creamy texture with well integrated tannins that lead to a subtly sweet, silky finish. Pair it with braised short ribs, gnocchi with roasted rabbit, or a rich ragù.
