Cobb Wines began in 1989 when David and Diane Cobb planted Coastlands Vineyard on the far Sonoma Coast, a remote stretch of ridgeline their son Ross helped cultivate as a young man. Ross went on to build his winemaking career at Williams Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch before founding Cobb Wines with his parents in 2001, starting with just 130 cases of Coastlands Pinot Noir. Today Ross farms three estate vineyards along with grower-partner sites across the region, having expanded the portfolio over the years to include Chardonnay and small lots of Riesling.

JoAnn's Block sits within Doc's Ranch Vineyard, just three miles from the Pacific and among the westernmost planted sites on the Sonoma Coast. This single acre of Clone 5 Chardonnay grows in marine sedimentary soils at 1,000 feet elevation, close enough to the ocean that its extreme cool-climate conditions consistently produce the most electric, concentrated fruit in the Cobb lineup. The 2021 wine underwent full malolactic fermentation to soften its naturally high acidity and matured 22 months in barrel with only 10 percent new French oak.

Delicate aromas of golden apple, bread dough, beeswax, and sea spray lead into a light-bodied, intensely focused palate. A tangy spine of acidity carries the fruit through a long finish with a touch of textural weight. Pair it with fresh oysters, grilled halibut, or a simple herb-roasted chicken.

96+ Points
"he 2021 Chardonnay Doc's Ranch Vineyard Joann's Block comes from vines planted in marine sedimentary soils at 1,000 feet in altitude. It underwent full malolactic conversion and was matured in 10% new French oak for 22 months. It has delicate, slowly unwinding scents of golden apples, bread dough, beeswax, saline and matchstick. The light-bodied palate is intensely focused, with a tangy spine of acidity driving expansive fruits that seem to gain in intensity as it glides through the mouth, and a touch of texture lengthens the finish. Reminiscent of Chablis, the Joann's Block offers surprising flavor for its modest 11.2% alcohol, and it will be long lived in bottle. 260 cases were made."
