2021 Cobb Wines - Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Swan & Calera Selection (750ml)
Cobb Wines began in 1989, when David Cobb, a marine ecologist by trade, started cultivating Pinot Noir vines on a small parcel overlooking the Sonoma Coast, land that would become the family's Coastlands Vineyard. His son Ross joined the project after building his own resume at respected producers including Ferrari-Carano and Williams Selyem, where he worked as both viticulturist and enologist. Together they founded Cobb Wines in 2001, combining David's deep knowledge of coastal terroir with Ross's technical winemaking skill to build one of the Sonoma Coast's most detail-obsessed small producers.
This bottling comes from Doc's Ranch Vineyard, an east and southeast facing site sitting between 1,000 and 1,200 feet in elevation, exposed to near constant Pacific fog. It combines two distinct Pinot Noir selections, the elegant, floral Swan clone, planted in 1999, and the more structured, earthy Calera clone, both grown in marine sedimentary soil. Ross fermented the wine with 50 percent whole clusters, a technique that adds spice and textural complexity, and only 330 cases were produced.
The glass shows sweet red cherry, mint, star anise, crushed flowers, cedar, and autumn leaves, lifted and ethereal in style. It has real understatement and class, with a structure built to reward patience. Try it with braised rabbit, wild mushroom crostini, or a wedge of camembert.
