2021 Kaapzicht - Steytler Pentagon Red Blend Stellenbosch (750ml)
Kaapzicht is a fourth-generation family estate in Bottelary, Stellenbosch, considered by many to sit among the region's finest red wine terroir. Major David Charles Steytler acquired the farm, then called Rozendal, in 1946, and it passed to his son George in 1969. Brothers Danie and George later joined the operation and registered the property as an official estate, naming it Kaapzicht for its sweeping view of Table Mountain and Cape Town. Today cellar master Danie Steytler Jnr and his wife Carin continue to run the farm's vineyards, which sit on ancient, fertile granite soils cooled by breezes off Table Bay and False Bay.
The Pentagon is Kaapzicht's flagship red, a blend of five Bordeaux varieties led by Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, grown on weathered granite topsoil over gravel and clay. Each component is fermented separately in small batches, then aged individually in French oak for close to two years before the winemaker selects and blends the final wine, which is bottled unfined and unfiltered. It is released only in exceptional vintages.
Expect brooding dark fruit, roasted spice, and a tightly woven structure of fine-grained tannin balanced by bright acidity. The wine carries real power and concentration, with the purity to age gracefully over the coming years. Serve it with slow-roasted lamb, braised oxtail, or a rich beef stew.
