2021 Lail - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa J.Daniel Cuvee (750ml)
Robin Lail founded Lail Vineyards in 1995, continuing a family winemaking legacy that traces back to her father, John Daniel Jr., who once ran the historic Inglenook estate. The J. Daniel Cuvee, named in his honor, stands as the winery's flagship bottling and is crafted by winemakers Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky, who have guided the label toward a style built on precision, freshness, and depth.
This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon draws fruit from four respected sites: Heimark Vineyard in Calistoga, Vine Hill Ranch in Oakville, Steltzner Vineyard in Stags Leap, and Lail's own Mole Hill on Howell Mountain. Blending grapes from these varied elevations and soils gives the wine its layered complexity. After fermentation, the 2021 vintage aged twenty months in mostly new French oak barrels, allowing the fruit to gain structure while the tannins settled into a polished, well-integrated frame.
The nose opens with raspberry and black cherry set against dark chocolate, cassis, and a whisper of graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly concentrated, its texture riding somewhere between silky and velvety, with a long finish touched by licorice and dried herbs. This is a wine built for the cellar, though it drinks beautifully now alongside dry-aged ribeye, lamb chops, or a wedge of aged cheddar.
