Mastrojanni was founded in 1975 when Roman lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni acquired the San Pio and Loreto estates in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, land then considered too wild and overgrown for serious viticulture. Since 2008 the estate has been part of Gruppo Illy, the coffee family, though it has retained its original winemaking team throughout the transition. Winemaker Giulia Harri has led the cellar since 2022, the same year she was named Best Young Italian Winemaker by an Italian wine magazine, bringing fresh energy to one of Montalcino's most historic addresses.

This Brunello comes from the estate's 2021 harvest, a vintage shaped by a dry, hot summer that followed an anxious spring frost, tempered by cool nights and a couple of late-season downpours that kept the vines in balance. Grapes are sorted by hand, destemmed, and moved by gravity into resin-coated concrete tanks for fermentation, with daily pumpovers guiding extraction. The wine then spends 36 months aging across Allier, Slavonian, and Styrian oak barrels of varying sizes, a slow process that builds structure while allowing the fruit to stay in focus.

Expect a richly aromatic wine with a nose that layers red fruit, earth, and gentle oak spice, framed by fine, powdery tannins. On the palate it shows real depth and complexity, built for years of further evolution in the cellar. Pair it with braised short rib, wild boar, or a well-aged pecorino.

95 Points
"Complex and shapely, the Mastrojanni 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows fluid contours that evolve with each swirl of the glass before settling into notes of cassis, dark cherry, spice, grenadine and grilled watermelon. The palate carries energy and brightness over a medium-to full-bodied frame, finishing with a subtle mineral saltiness that adds lift and definition. This classic village expression draws fruit from 14.4 hectares across varied soils, exposures and elevations, resulting in a balanced and expressive wine that remains very much in evolution."
