2021 Poggio Antico - Toscana Rosso IGT Madre Super Tuscan (750ml)

Poggio Antico occupies one of Montalcino's highest and most striking sites, with vineyards perched southwest of the medieval citadel at an average elevation near 1,800 feet. Founded in 1976 on 50 acres of clay and limestone soil, the estate has since grown to about 80 acres under vine and built a reputation on both its traditional Brunello and its more modern expressions. In 2017 the property was acquired by Atlas Invest under new general manager Federico Trost, who has since led a detailed soil survey mapping the estate's distinct micro terroirs and pushed the vineyards toward full organic conversion.

Madre is an equal blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, a pairing that lets the structure of Cabernet meet the perfume and freshness of Sangiovese. The two varieties are typically vinified and aged separately, resting in a mix of French tonneaux and barrique for around 18 months before being blended and given further time to integrate in bottle. This patient, dual-track approach allows each grape to develop fully before the final assemblage is made.

The wine shows a deep garnet color with violet highlights, opening to aromas of ripe black fruit, cherry, and sweet spice with hints of leather and cocoa. On the palate it is full-bodied yet fresh, with fine, well-integrated tannins and a long, silky finish. It suits grilled ribeye, roasted lamb, or hard aged cheeses.
