2021 Produttori del Barbaresco - Barbaresco DOCG Riserva Montestefano (750ml)
Produttori del Barbaresco owes its existence to the village priest of Barbaresco, who in 1958 united nineteen smallholding families around a shared belief that pooling their vineyards and cellars was the only way to keep their farms afloat. That cooperative spirit has carried through nearly seven decades, and the estate now ranks among the most respected names in Piedmont, releasing single-vineyard Riservas from its finest crus only in years worthy of the honor.
Montestefano is widely regarded as the most powerful of the cooperative's nine crus, prized for its dense, dark fruit and firm tannic structure that often rivals Barolo in weight. In most vintages it shows richer and thicker than its neighboring sites, though 2021 brought a surprising twist, with the wine emerging fresher and more lifted than its usual brooding self while still retaining serious depth. As with the estate's other Riservas, the wine spends additional time in large oak casks before release, following the traditional, unhurried methods the cooperative has followed since its founding.
The 2021 opens with iris, violet, red berry, and spice, unfolding into ripe Morello cherry, orange peel, cranberry, and licorice, framed by firm, energetic tannins and bright acidity. Full-bodied yet balanced, it has the structure to reward patient cellaring. Pair it with braised veal, wild mushroom dishes, or aged Toma cheese.
