2021 Quinta Do Noval - Porto Vintage Port (750ml)
Quinta do Noval is among the oldest Port houses and stands apart for producing its Vintage Ports entirely from estate-grown fruit on a single vineyard, rather than blending grapes purchased from growers across the Douro. The property is perhaps best known for Nacional, its legendary parcel of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines that yields one of the rarest and most sought-after Ports in the world. True to Noval's long-held philosophy that quality alone, not market demand, should determine a declaration, the 2021 marked the estate's eleventh consecutive year of Vintage Port release, an unusually long run reflecting a remarkable stretch of strong vintages.
The 2021 growing season broke from recent trends of hot, dry Douro summers, bringing one of the coolest and most moderate cycles in years, with none of the heat waves that had become typical. That gentler ripening period allowed grapes, primarily Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão, and Tinta Roriz, to develop slowly and evenly. The fruit was foot-trodden in traditional stone lagares, then the wine matured for eighteen months in wooden casks within Noval's air-conditioned cellars before bottling.
The wine shows a black core with a dark purple rim and an elegant, balanced nose marked by pure floral notes and black fruit aromas, layered with cassis, candied violet, and cedary herbal touches. Dense, firm, and finely grained tannins give the palate real structure without sacrificing purity or freshness. It pairs well with hard sheep's cheese, a dark fruit crumble, or bittersweet chocolate mousse.
