2021 Quinta Do Noval - Porto Vintage Port (750ml)
Quinta do Noval is one of the Douro's oldest and most singular estates, first recorded in land registries in 1715 and unusual in being named after, and sourced entirely from, its own vineyard. Its modern identity took shape after António José da Silva bought the property in 1894 and replanted the phylloxera-ravaged terraces, setting Noval on a path of estate-grown fruit at a time when most shippers simply purchased grapes. That commitment was cemented in 1931, when Noval boldly declared a Vintage Port in a year most houses skipped, a decision that helped establish the estate among the top rank of Port producers. The 2021 marked its eleventh consecutive vintage declaration, reflecting Noval's philosophy of releasing whenever quality warrants it, regardless of quantity.
The 2021 growing season followed a wet winter and steady April rainfall that fully replenished the estate's water reserves after the previous year's extreme heat and drought. The wine draws on Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão, and Tinta Roriz from plots largely replanted in the 1990s, foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares at controlled temperatures before aging around eighteen months in wood and bottling unfiltered.
The result is deep purple in color, elegant and balanced on the nose, with pure floral notes layered over black fruit, baked blueberry, and a touch of cocoa and spice. The palate is dense, with firm, fine-grained tannins supporting real structure beneath its trademark purity and finesse. It suits braised lamb shank, dark chocolate soufflé, or a plate of dried figs and walnuts.
