2021 Scavino, P. - Barolo Bric Fiasc (750ml)
The Scavino family has farmed in Castiglione Falletto since 1921, and the winery that carries Paolo Scavino’s name is now run by his granddaughters Enrica and Elisa, the fourth generation. Their father Enrico, a member of the Barolo Boys, built a collection of roughly 20 historic Barolo crus and persuaded his father to bottle Bric dël Fiasc on its own in 1978, making it the estate’s first single-vineyard Barolo.
This 100 percent Nebbiolo grows on the southwest-facing Bric dël Fiasc slope in Castiglione Falletto, where marl soils beneath a looser sandy topsoil give the vines steady access to water. The wine ages for roughly two years, about a year in French oak barriques and a year in larger oak casks, before bottling. Only about 12,100 bottles were produced.
The 2021 shows rich, textured fruit with dark cherry, red berries, dried flowers, and chalk, framed by clove, cinnamon, white pepper, and a touch of bitter chocolate. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and succulent, with polished, powdery tannins that give drive and firm grip. Bold and structured, it benefits from several years of cellaring.
