2021 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)

Spottswoode’s historic estate sits on the western edge of St. Helena. Founded in 1882 by George Schonewald and named for Mrs. Albert Spotts, the property remained in her family for decades before Mary Weber Novak and Dr. Jack Novak purchased it in 1972. Mary released the first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, exactly a century after the estate’s founding. Since 1985, Spottswoode has been a pioneer in organic farming and today is certified biodynamic, regenerative organic, and B Corp. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the 42-acre Spottswoode Estate Vineyard, where alluvial clay loam soils provide drainage and cooling maritime breezes from a gap in the Mayacamas Range help moderate the valley heat. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged twenty months in barrels that are mostly new French oak with a touch of Hungarian wood.

Tasting Notes

  • Aromas of violet and cassis, accented by crushed stone and pencil shavings.
  • Medium-bodied yet richly layered on the palate, with firm, silky tannins and lively acidity.
  • Finish is long and elegant, leaving a refined impression.

100 Points
"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon needs a fair bit of shaking to wake up notes of blackcurrant jelly, black raspberries, and mulberries, leading to hints of cinnamon stick, red roses, and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate is tightly knit with bold red and black fruit notes and provocative mineral sparks, supported by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic tension, finishing long and layered. It’s another WOW vintage for Spottswoode! The blend includes 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot"
