Thelema Mountain Vineyards sits on the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch, on the southeastern slopes of the Simonsberg mountain. Gyles Webb, an accountant by training, bought the dilapidated fruit farm in 1983 with support from his wife's family, pulling out the old orchards to plant vines in their place. The manor house was restored and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988, quickly gaining a following that saw new vintages sell out within a month of release by the mid 1990s. Webb moved into the role of cellar master in 2000, handing winemaking duties to Rudi Schultz, who continues to lead production today.

The estate's vineyards climb to 530 meters above sea level on mainly south facing slopes, among the highest and coolest sites in Stellenbosch, where rich red soils support premium grape growing. For this Shiraz, grapes are gently destemmed while retaining as many whole berries as possible, then passed over a vibrating table to remove any stray plant material before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. A combination of pump overs and punch downs during fermentation helps develop color, tannin, and flavor, and the wine ages in French oak barrels, a portion of them new, for eighteen months.

This Shiraz opens with black pepper, ripe plum, and dark berries, followed by layers of mulberry and subtle oak spice. The palate is supple and refined, with well integrated tannins and a savory edge that carries through a long finish. It pairs naturally with grilled meats, hearty stews, or mature cheeses.
