A Sardinian red that drinks well above its price. Montessu is led by Carignano and blended with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, from the Sulcis region in Sardinia’s southwest. It’s dark and aromatic, with cedar, sage, incense and dried black cherry, then juicy yet silky on the palate, with ripe red berry fruit, autumnal spice and a hint of graphite. The finish is long and gently tannic. Pour it with grilled lamb, sausages, tomato-based pasta or aged pecorino, and decant it for a little extra air.
