2022 Beringer - Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley (750ml)
Beringer holds the distinction of being California's longest continuously operating winery, founded in 1876 by brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer in Napa Valley. The estate has racked up a string of industry firsts over the decades, from one of the earliest gravity-fed production facilities to hosting Napa Valley's first public winery tours back in 1934. That pioneering streak extended into Sonoma County in the 1960s, when Beringer began sourcing fruit from Knights Valley, eventually helping the area earn official AVA status in 1983.
Knights Valley sits in a small pocket between Napa Valley to the south and Alexander Valley to the north, prized for the same Bordeaux varieties that thrive in both neighboring regions. The 600-acre vineyard Beringer farms here sits on cobbled alluvial soils that concentrate flavor in the fruit. This 2022 bottling blends Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, then ages in French oak for around 16 to 20 months to build structure while keeping the tannins smooth.
Look for a deep ruby color with aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and boysenberry, layered with dark chocolate, sage, and a touch of tobacco. The palate is full-bodied with firm yet velvety tannins, leading to a long finish accented by mocha and baking spice. Pair it with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or a sharp aged gouda.
