2022 Charles Van Canneyt - Chambertin (750ml)

Charles van Canneyt is best known as the winemaker behind his family's Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, which he has run since 2008. In 2012 he launched a négociant label under his own name to expand production beyond the family's estate holdings, buying grapes and must from a network of well-placed growers. The wines are vinified and aged in his own cellar, in a style closely aligned with the purity and transparency of the domaine wines.

This Chambertin comes from a plot of vines more than eighty years old in the smallest of the Chambertin grand crus, sourced through Charles's network of growers rather than estate-owned land. Only three barrels were made in 2022. The wine is aged in French oak with about twenty percent new barrels for roughly a year before bottling.

The 2022 is powerful and rich, with open, well-defined raspberry fruit, cedar, and crushed blackberry on the nose. It carries huge, multidimensional intensity while keeping impressive freshness and minerality, with tannins that are bold but precise. The finish is unctuous, dense, and linear, pointing to real potential ahead for what is a strikingly well-made Chambertin from such a tiny production.
